+//As Lucia in her Met debut, 1961//\\
+The Metropolitan Opera mourns the death of Joan Sutherland, one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, who was responsible for the revival of numerous bel canto operas that had not been performed in many years. From her debut here in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor in 1961, audiences were mesmerized by her brilliant vocalism. Her voice was of a type rarely heard: a full dramatic soprano with amazing flexibility and an astonishing upper range, which enabled her to sing such parts as the title roles of Bellini’s Norma and Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment. In all, she sang 223 performances at the Met, many of them in works staged especially for her, including Bellini’s La Sonnambula and I Puritani and the company premiere of Massenet’s Esclarmonde. Backstage at the Met, she was known for her rapier wit and collegiality, which made her an admired and well-liked performer. We share in the sadness of her many friends and admirers and extend our deepest sympathy to her husband, the eminent conductor Richard Bonynge, who so often led her performances, to her son, Adam, and all their family.
