It far exceeded anything I ever could have imagined and gifted me with the most cherished family of friends,” Kathy Alvino reflected shortly before her death. Kathleen Mary Alvino passed away at home peacefully on October 8, 2022. She was born on April 26, 1946, in Elizabeth, NJ, to John and Kathleen Teator (Trimble) and spent her childhood and teenage years in Linden, NJ. She graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption High School and attended Katherine Gibbs in Montclair, NJ in 1965. These opportunities launched her on a serendipitous career path that brought her joy and surprise throughout her life.\\ Kathy began her career as a secretary at Convertors Inc., in Newark, NJ and transitioned to Merck & Co, where she met her husband, Ted Alvino. In 1973 the couple moved to Rio De Janeiro. This experience opened a new view of the world, and set her on a path of curiosity, openness to diverse cultures and travel, lasting her entire life. Kathy eventually moved to Massachusetts, working as a secretary at Fenwal Corporation in Ashland. There she was introduced to the field of human resources and began her college education at night. She attended Northeastern University, graduating in 1981 with a BS in industrial relations. Her first HR job was at Crosby Valve & Gage in Wrentham, MA. She received her MBA in organizational development in 1986. Upon a promotion to Director of HR at Crosby she took a two-year assignment in England, spending all her free time traveling throughout Europe and the UK. Kathy moved to RI in 1989, joining RISD as Associate VP for Human Resources, a position she held for 10 years. She joined Providence College in 2001 as Associate VP of HR. She often said that her experience at PC was God’s special gift to her. She cherished every day working and laughing with her many colleagues and very dear Friar friends. Throughout her life, she was devoted to racial equality and social justice. Her love of learning and experiencing new cultures led her to travel around the US, to Brazil, Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Italy France, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Australia, Spain and many other countries. Kathy could always be found at the beach, a space which brought her peace and a cherished appreciation of eternity. She loved the arts including classical music, ballet, theater and museums. Cooking always remained a passion and she delighted in preparing meals for her many friends. Kathy surrounded herself with beloved friends. Her thoughts always were focused on helping others and caring for their needs. This generosity of spirit was also manifest in her many philanthropic contributions. Kathy is survived by her “family of friends—Barbara and Steven Sweeny, Patricia and Mark Coyne, Rebecca Wetzel, Michael Gorman, Dr. Harry Sobel, Jill La Point, Frances and John Bonscher, and other close members of the Friar family. She is also survived by her nephews, Timothy Eastman and Thomas Teator; her nieces, Patricia Eastman, Joyce Teator, Linda Rivers, Susan Nutter and Sharon Adamchak; and her cousins Michael Mace and Rima Jakub, Mark Cohen, Rebecca Barner, and Mahlon Cohen. A memorial Mass will be held for Kathy at 10 AM on Monday, October 24, 2022 at St. Pius Catholic Church, 240 Eaton Street, Providence, RI 02908. Burial will be private.
