GVP Impact Series II

I got this harddisk extension for my Amiga 500 around end of 1992. It housed a 54MB Fujitsu SCSI HD and 2 MB of Fast RAM, and could even be extended with an MS/DOS PC emulator.

This device was stored away for decades, but unlike my Amiga 500, this exension suffered from it. The case had mold stains, and the metal base was rusty. I refurbished the extension in 2021, replacing the mechanical harddisk by an SD card, and extending the memory to 4 MB, which is the maximum configuration. It was also modified to get its power from the Amiga bus instead of a separate PSU. This is possible because the SD card consumes considerably less energy than a mechanical harddisk.

Configuration

  • Built: Around 1991/1992
  • SCSI2SD v5 as harddisk
  • RAM: 4 MB
  • ROM: Latest GVP faast V4.15

Restauration Works

  • Cleaned and whitened the case top
  • Removed flash rust from metal case frame
  • Upgraded the firmware to the latest version found in the internet
  • Changed the internal power cable from 5.25" type to 3.5" type
  • New SCSI ribbon cable
  • HD replaced with a SCSI2SD v5
  • Extended RAM from 2MB to 4MB
  • Modified the board so it is powered by the Amiga, and does not need a separate PSU any more
  • Removed the case fan. It was never active because of its loud noise, and now it was colliding with the SCSI2SD board.
  • Replaced all case screws. Many original had damaged heads, one was missing.
