Sinclair ZX Spectrum

I bought this ZX Spectrum at an online auction. As a speciality, this machine was "Assembled in Portugal", which I have never seen before.

It was sold as "untested", but a first check found that a membrane connector was broken off, and the machine itself completely dead. Fortunately the repair was easy, as only the 7805 voltage regulator needed replacement. The previous owner tried to replace the keyboard membrane, but botched it, leaving the faceplate heavily bent. I decided to replace the faceplate with a new metallic red replica (and use a black keymat to match the color), but keep the rest of the look original.

Configuration

  • Built: End of 1984, Assembled in Portugal
  • Mainboard: Issue 6A
  • CPU: Z80A
  • ULA: 6C001E-7 (date code 8435, probably made in Phillipines)
  • RAM: 48KB

Restauration Works

  • Restauration was carried out in March 2022.
  • All power lines were missing. Replaced 7805 by a Traco Power TSR1-2450. System worked again after that.
  • Recapping, Composite Mod.
  • Case cleaned, making sure that the "Assembled in Portugal" label was kept intact.
  • Membrane connector was broken off and missing, so the membrane was replaced.
  • Faceplate was heavily bent, and was replaced with a new "metallic red" one.
