Spinning, Clomping, pandemonium - Tom's take

We attended this triple bill on a Wednesday night with a post performance discussion. The first piece involved whirling. The whirler was surpprisingly graceful with her hands as she continuously spun in place. The poetry accompanying the music was read in meditation style. The blue flowing costume along with the blue and sometimes pure white lighting made it a meditative experience. If you get into the poetry it's quite an experience. That was the intent of the choreographer/dancer as articulated in the PPD.

The second number was just plain bizarre. Lots of clomping and demonstration of great strength and agility trying to create movement while wearing 12 inch high platform shoes. The choreographer says they've never had an accident. The whole thing was weird but the body formations were very sculpture like and arty.

The third piece, Umwelt is French for “environment”. It was hundreds of 10 second vignettes of people eating, changing clothes, loving, fighting and going about life as usual to the sound of a stress inducing constant whoosh. The act was performed in front of mirrors set across the back of the stage that shimmered in the powerful wind blowing across the set. This was a brilliantly executed piece of performance art. The combination of annoying sound, visual imagery and dancer movement was a great reflection of our society and the stress inducing effect it is having on our behavior.
