Helen Mahr Nicholas passed away on Thursday, June 25. Helen was born in 1918 in St. Joseph, Missouri, but spent most of her life in the Austin and Fredericksburg area. During World War II, she worked in aircraft factories and marveled that women were being allowed to wear slacks. She worked for hospitals and charities, and, inside the home, she created a loving and nurturing atmosphere. Her home reflected her many interests – antiques, cooking, crafts, and reading. An avid reader, she enjoyed a good mystery and loved exchanging books with others. Her love, faith and belief in education helped to mold her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Anne Nicholas, and her granddaughter, Laura Nicholas Hupach. She was a wonderful friend and neighbor to so many, always positive and always putting the needs of others before her own. Years ago, she was described by friends as a true “angel on earth.” Her loving presence is missed by her family and the friends and staff at Autumn Oaks of Corinth. That earthly angel has now gone home. We were truly blessed by her love. In lieu of flowers, the family has recommended donations to the Texas Woman's University Leadership Scholarship Fund, or the SPCA.
