Last Night of Ballyhoo
RLT did it again for us. We arrived on a warm April afternoon then walked the Rose garden. it was Easter Sunday and many people in Easter clothes were walking about, even a few NC State coeds in bikinis were sunning on blankets.
The Last Night takes place in 1939 Atlanta. A girl want a date to Ballyhoo but no one has asked her. Her cousin comes home from Welsley College and is asked immediately by Joe who is working for Uncle George, the family supporter. The story becomes one about Jews and what kind of Jew they are, East or West of the Elba River. In other words, German Jews and Eastern European Jews. The prejudices looks silly and the Ballyhoo dance is for the German Jews of which Joe is not.
I saw a resemblance here between Lala the cousin who want to go to Ballyhoo since it;s a pretentious social occasion and Sue Guenther. Libbie is Sunny, the cousin from Welsley who doesn't care if she goes to Ballyhoo or not but she is the one who was asked by the handsome Joe.
