This was a moving rheingold. The music was well done but more importantly the artsy staging had us focusing on the characters. Never before have I seen Rhinemaidens in real water swimming and diving in topless clear plastic suits. This combined with large rear projections of water made it a very real scene. When we meet Votan and Frica they are in large elevated platforms run by a couple of guys pushing them around the stage and operating hydraulics so they go up and down. This too was effective in elevating the gods above all else. The Giants were super large robogiants. Loge came onstage buzzing around in a Segway. Everytime I see a ring performance I get a new insight into the action onstage. This time was no different. The unique staging along with reading the subtitles gave me some new aspects to Rheingold. Of course the music itself was very powerful and moving. Loved it, especially the entry of the gods into Valhalla. I didn't know Frica questions Wotan what Valhalla means, for instance. Good stuff!!!!
