Cenerentola
March 28, 2013 Dorothy Chandler Pavillion at the LA Music Center
This was a delightful production shared with Houston Grand Opera. We saw similar humor from Houston's Rossini Italian in Algiers. This time another Rossini production had excellent mice helping with the story and a tiny little carriage and horse that first was silhouted across the upper stage which caused a laugh then the tiny toy carriage paraded stage front. Very humorous. The singing of the principals and the chorus was very good. Kate Lindsey excelled as usual. The pre performance lecture by James Conlon was outstanding. Using an iPod he dynamically was able to skip to whatever musical measure he wished to demonstrate. An accompanying sound man helped even things out for the assembled audience. LA Opera is fortunate to have a large space over 4 levels that can accommodate about 2/3 of the theater audience.
