Nederlands Dans Theatre
We left at 6 to go to Chapel Hill to find parking on campus. Found the Cobb deck which is free to the public after 5:30. good deal. Noticed many pretty college coeds wearing funky boots in the light rain. It's amazing how young they look. they have the bodies of a grown woman but such baby faces.
The company itself was fantastic. Highly skilled and together, they are a large group of 30 dancers. The first number, “The Second Person”, starts with a puppet reciting “this is my head, this is my face, this is my neck this is my body” over and over. This finally is mimicked by a solo girl dancer performing very precise crisp moves to the spoken word, “this is my face, etc”. The girl grows through adolescences with some flirting with a boy then serious lovemaking with a boy. In the end the puppet is replaced with a semi nude girl wearing a see through flesh colored leotard and the group of dancers manipulating her just as they did the puppet earlier.
The second piece which is 45 minutes long and performed after intermission has music of Phillip Glass.
